What is Diabetes

Diabetes is a state of high blood sugar.

The sugar released from the breakdown of the food we intake is carried to the cells by the blood. Insulin produced by the pancreas plays a vital role in the entry of sugar into cells from the blood. In normal conditions, the pancreas produces sufficient insulin for this activity.

These cells then utilise the sugar to keep the body system going. To put it in a nutshell sugar is the fuel for the body cells.

When the sugar from the blood is not able to enter the cells, the level of sugar in the blood rises. This state of high blood sugar is called diabetes.

This can be due to insufficient amout of insulin produced by pancreas or the cells are unable to make use of the sufficient amount of insulin produced by the pancreas. In either case, the sugar in the blood becomes high and causes diabetes.
