Types of Diabetes

The different types of diabetes are type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes.

Type 1 Diabetes

It is otherwise called as Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus(IDDM). Type 1 diabetes is caused when the pancreas produces minimal or no insulin. This lack or absence of insulin results in high blood sugar. Frequent insulin injections need to be administered to bring down the blood sugar level to normal range.

Type 2 Diabetes

It is otherwise called as Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus(NIDDM). Here the pancreas produces sufficient amount of insulin, but the cells are resistant to insulin preventing the sugar from entering the cells. This condition is called type 2 diabetes.

Gestational Diabetes

Diabetes during pregnancy is called gestational diabetes. Body cells are not able to utilise the sugar present in blood thus leading onto high blood sugar. Surprisingly this comes down to normal few days after the baby is born. This is treated like any type 1 diabetes. Very high blood sugar during pregnancy can affect the baby in many ways and hence it is important to
bring down the blood sugar.
